Chimney Flashing

Its primary function is to bridge the gap between the roof decking and the chimney

preventing water from getting in your home. Proper flashing is essential to avoid damage.

Base Flashing

Chimney base flashing covers the base of a

chimney. Overlapping individual L-shaped

metal along the bottom of the chimney.

Step Flashing

Used for the vertical sides of the chimney.

Step flashing consists of multiple L-shaped

pieces of metal. They are installed one by

one per shingle up the chimney.

Backpan Flashing

A chimney backpan is a specialized piece of

flashing installed on the top side of a chimney.

Its primary job is diverting rain and melting

snow away 4 inches past either side.

Counter Flashing

Installed directly over the base and step flashing.

On masonry chimneys, counter is embedded

and mortared directly in the brick to prevent

water from running behind the flashing.

Valley Installation

Three methods with asphalt roofs:

Open, closed cut, and woven valleys.​

For all methods, valley flashing must

be in place before installing shingles.

Underlay is required before valleys.

Open Valley

Open valley roof is a roofing design where the

shingles from both intersecting roof planes stop

short 3 inches of the valley centerline, exposing

metal flashing. This visible metal channel directs

heavy water and snow quickly off the roof.

Closed Cut Valley

In a closed-cut valley, shingles from the roof

that is smaller or lower run into the bigger or

steeper side running across the valley and up

the intersecting slope. The shingles overlap

and are cut 1-2 inches from the centerline.

Woven/Weaved Valley

Woven valleys involve Weaving shingles

up both intersecting roof planes directly

across the valley interlacing shingles

from alternating sides back and forth.

Vinyl Siding Applications

Ventilation

Having proper ventilation at the eaves

and ridge will help optimize your roof.

To eliminate moisture. You want a equal

balance of 50% intake and 50% exhaust.

Proper Insulation Prevent Ice Dams

By keeping the roof deck cold and ventilated

in the winter this prevents snow from melting

and freezing at the eaves, which helps

stop ice dams causing damage.

Roofing Baffles

Roof baffles (also known as rafter vents)

create an unobstructed air channel between

your roof's insulation and the roof deck.

They allow fresh air to travel from the

soffit preventing moisture ice dams.

Overlaping Layers

If your attic is long, overlap the baffles by about

1 to 2 inches (with the upper baffle resting on top

of the lower one) so that moist air cannot escape.
